The role of NVAR team members includes assisting the following agencies:
Although they are volunteers, the lifesaving service provided by the members of the Nicola Valley Search and Rescue Team requires that they maintain the standards of unpaid professionals in assisting municipal and provincial agencies.
A search is an emergency and can happen at any time. Our volunteers need to be ready to be deployed into the field at a moment’s notice. Our skills including swift water, ice, winter response, avalanche, rope, ATV/UTV, helicopter safety, first aid and local training.
- Police in the search and rescue of missing persons and in evidence searches
- BC Ambulance Service in the rescue of injured persons
- Provincial Coroner’s Service in body recovery operations
- Municipal agencies in search, rescue, communications, and other roles during civil emergencies

SWIFTWATER RESCUEOur swiftwater team is prepared to enter moving water to perform technical rescues. We are trained in identifying risks, self rescue, and the various options for rescuing others, as well as the decision-making process required to chose the most appropriate rescue approach.
AVALANCHE RESCUEOur avalanche rescue team is trained in understanding, recognizing and avoiding avalanche hazards. We focus on terrain recognition, basic snow pack structure, weather, group management, safe route finding and avalanche rescue techniques.

GSARAll team members must complete extensive Ground Search and Rescue training which includes first aid and transport, map and compass navigation, GPS operations, radio communications, knowledge of a variety of different search types, basic swiftwater and rope rescue awareness, outdoor survival and more.
HIGHWAY RESCUEWhen there is an accident on the highway where terrain and conditions offer unique challenges, we may be tasked to assist first responders in locating and rescuing accident victims.

FLAT ICE RESCUEOur flat ice team is trained in self rescue and the full range of techniques and specialized equipment that can be used for rescuing others including the significant medical considerations for patient packaging and extrication posed by cold water immersion.
LEADERSHIPTrained Search and Rescue Managers and Team Leaders work together to coordinate and manage tasks, communicate with governing agencies and work closely with RCMP, BC Ambulance Service, BC Corner Service and other SAR groups in BC.
